Super Cute (and quick & easy) Knitter Ornament

I just delivered this ornament to my knitting neighbor/friend and she was thrilled. They turned out really cute and were super simple to make. I was working from items I had on hand, so they weren’t exactly what I’d envisioned, but still turned out nicely.
First I gathered supplies. Some yarn, bamboo skewers, ball ornaments and Sculpey clay. These balls were actually a kid craft project years ago. We’d dripped paint into clear ornaments and moved them around until the two colors created a tie dye effect. The kids had a ball with it. I chose them to “recover” because 1) I wasn’t using them on the tree and 2) they were smaller than your average ball ornament. You’ll want a fairly small ball since the yarn will increase it’s size. Actually, you could make the ball just from the yarn itself and skip the ball altogether if you chose.

I’d originally planned to cover the skewers in red Sculpey. The first problem was that the only color we had, besides the silver, was purple. I went ahead and covered the skewer in the purple, but it seemed a bit bulky to me, so I decided to just use the skewers as is (after cutting them to size) and add the silver ends. The final product was pretty cute and they were very easy to make.

Instructions:
Wrap yarn around a small Christmas ball ornament. I used a dot of hot glue to hold down my first strand and continued to add dots of glue here and there just to keep things from shifting.
Cut bamboo skewers to a size that is appropriate for the ball of yarn you’ll be making.
Create needle ends out of silver Sculpey and attach to skewer. I found it easiest to put a ball of clay on the end of the skewer and work that to look like an end. Bake at 250% for 15 minutes.
Add string for hanging and insert “needles”. Done!
You could also make a mini version by using a lighter weight yarn with nails as needles.
