Day 27~ Start a New Tradition with Your Kids: Make Butter

October29

In our home, we LOVE to make homemade butter! My kids have so much fun doing this craft. All you need is a jar, heavy whipping cream, and salt and you are ready to make your own butter!

Take 1 cup of heavy cream and add to the jar. Sprinkle in 1/8th of a teaspoon of salt and put the lid on. Cover the top with a cloth to keep from leaking. Give the jar to the kids and allow them shake the jar until the butter forms. This takes about 20 minutes, but my kids love to do this!

This has become a tradition every single year. On November 1st, my kids start reminding me, “It’s time to make butter!”

What are some traditions that you do with the kids?

I always love your posts! I’m really liking the Thanksgiving countdown idea. We will be making butter this year. What fun. Thanks!

We love making butter with our kitchen aid mixer here. Our kids are too small to shake a jar around so we put it in the mixer with the whipping blade and about 6 or 7 minutes later we have butter. We add the salt and fresh herbs if we want them later so we can use the leftover buttermilk to make delicious pancakes. Yummy!

So we tried to make butter tonight. We thought that we would start small… so I picked up 8oz of heavy whipping cream, used approx. 1/16th of salt covered and started to shake… it thickened up, but the 20 mins wasn’t up and the kids kept shaking… it liquified… I am new to all of this, is it possible to overwhip whipping cream? Should we have done if for 10 mins and not 20? HAHA! Please help!

Most of the time once it thickens up, you will see liquid amongst the butter that has made. That liquid is buttermilk. Also, even though it may look like it has liquified, you may need to squeeze some of the cream out and then continue to shake. It will thicken up.

    Hope this helps!
