Readers Helping Readers: Rosacea
After receiving my latest newsletter on homemade beauty treatments, a reader wrote in asking me this question. I don’t have an answer for her, because I don’t deal with this problem, but maybe you do and you have a solution to this problem!
I would love to know a natural way to soothe rosacea. There really isn’t much information out there regarding rosacea and I would love a good natural treatment to at least reduce the redness.
Thanks Shawn for sending this in. If you deal with rosacea and have a homemade cure to help reduce the redness, please leave a comment here. If you are reading this on Facebook, please come to the blog and post your response.
As always, thanks so much for all you do to help each other out!

Oh yeah!!!!! I finally get to help someone! I HAD rosacea. About a year ago I was totally cured!
I had prayed for 8 years and asked God to show me what to do. I tried herbs, vitamins and all natural creams. NOTHING helped. Nothing…
A year ago this month, I felt God tell me to do the “Daniel Fast.” I read about it and considered doing it. I finally made the decision that this had to be a God thing… I’ll do it!
Two weeks into the 21 days, my rosacea was TOTALLY clear! I have done 3 Daniel Fasts since then and am about to go on another starting next week.
Please consider doing this. It is difficult but with God, you can do it!
Here are the instructions: http://danielfast.wordpress.com/
I will be a support for you if you decide to do it. You can find me at http://www.homeward4.blogspot.com
Have a blessed day!

My mom went to consult with a compound pharmacist after having rosacea for a number of years, and trying all of the gels and creams that a dermatologist prescribed her with no success. The pharmacist told her to put natural progesterone cream on her face every day, and the rosacea is better than it’s ever been, if not gone. I believe the strength is 1%, and to my knowledge it is available at the big vitamin retailers, like The Vitamin Shoppe. It might take some looking around if you do not have a compound pharmacist near by, but it would definitely be worth it. It’s fairly inexpensive, and available without a prescription.
That is awesome Janet. I have always been a fan of fasting myself simply because it can bring you closer to God. I guess eliminating certain things from your diet allows your skin to heal.
Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for all the great advice. However, at this time, fasting is not an option for me. Just had a baby 4 weeks ago and I’m nursing. I will definitely try some of the other suggestions. I had a close friend who did the fast your talking about and although very hard, she said it changed her for the better, physically and emotionally.
Thanks again,

My husband has rosacea on face & eyes. Being faced with taking antibiotics daily for the rest of his life, he started taking 2 organic flax seed oil capsules each day instead of the antibiotic with great success. It has helped for over 2 yrs. Now he takes organic fish oil capsules with success as well. He also virtually eliminated all dairy & uses almond milk (chocolate & vanilla) as a substitute.
Hope it helps!
I’ve had good luck using expeller pressed coconut oil on my rosacea. I use it as a moisturizer. I put it on a couple times a day for the first week. For me, the results came pretty fast. Now I just use it in the morning, and most evenings.
I don’t know about homemade cures but I do know that a lot of people have had success using a lotion called Renew. It is made by Melaleuca which offers eco friendly and natural products. If anyone would like more information about it feel free to contact me at katelyndg@gmail.com
For us it was the elimination of Dairy and Wheat from our diets that took the rosecea away. For me it even has helped though not eliminated my facial zits.
I have had rosacea for years. I used prescription creams and antibiotics. They helped a little. What I find works the best is sulfur soap. I wash my face twice a day with it. Use water that is about the same temperature as your face. Do not ’scrub’ your face. Be gentle. Drinking anything hot can cause it to get worse. A change in temperature, such as going outside when it it cold, will make it worse. Your face needs to be kept at a constant temperature (good luck with that). Do not rub or scratch your face. My face still gets red if I am not careful, but I do not have the ‘pimple’ looking things.
Rosacea is usually caused by a food allergy or sensitivity, so naturally, eliminating the offensive food from your diet is the best way to get rid of the rosacea permanently. Pregnancy and other major hormonal changes can bring on food allergies. You can get an allergy test (I recommend the one from US Biotek Labs) through your doctor or naturopath. Progesterone cream may help your hormone balance depending on the nature of the imbalance.
Therapeutic grade essential oils may help the problem temporarily until you can figure out the allergy/hormone issue and I recommend trying an oil blend called Skin Care or Baby Soft, Lavender, or German Chamomille. For the hormones, two blends called Vitality MSM, Probiotocs (called Native Flora) or Native Enzymes would be helpful in dealing with the food allergy. These are all availabe on my website at http://www.oilandessence.com.
Hope you’re able to figure it out!
I wash my face with honey for rosacea. Just wet your face with warm water so the honey spreads around easily, wait a minute, then rinse well with warm water. I have tried the creams, gels, and pills, most of which made it worse. I have no clue why, but this works for me.
I have had rosacea for several years and have tried many different things. What has worked best for me consistently for almost a year is to clean my face with 100% grape seed oil (find it in the cooking oil section of the health food store). It’s a fairly large bottle and cost around $7. I pour some in my hand, rub my hands together, and rub it on my face gently — even remove my eye makeup with it. I wait maybe 60 seconds and then wash it off gently with a warm washcloth. I then use Eucerin’s night moisturizer for rosacea (Walgreens is the only place I have found it). This routine hasn’t cured it but certainly keeps it under control. Also, the only makeup I can use is Bare Minerals. Everything else makes my skin act up horribly! Hope this helps.
My mom and her sister have delt with Rosacea for years, each using their own system to take care of it. I am 36 and living in very cold Germany (after living in a tropical climate all my life), and I started having issues last year, my first winter here. Unfortunately I disagree that it is an allergy. If you have fair, sensative skin, you can be fair game for it, especially if it runs in the family. For me, exposure to very cold wind and going into a warm room lit me up like a Christmas tree. I went into an Apoteke here (a pharmacy) and the chemist reccomended that I try a line called “La Roche-Posay” from France. You can take a skin test on their website, and they have a line specifically for Rosacea. After taking the test, I found out that I have “intolerant” skin that simply reacts to anything. I have tried the “Toleraine” line and I have had absolutely no redness since I started using it. We even were outside in the cold snow for 4 straight days on vacation (which before would be like throwing boiling water on my face with the stinging, burning & redness) and I had NO redness or stinging. I’m not sure where you can find it stateside, but maybe you can find it online. I swear by it!
I do know that certain things can trigger it and make it worse. You have to be careful drinking anything too warm because the steam can irritate your skin, also hot, spicy foods, extreme weather temperatures, be careful when you wash your face to NOT use anything abrasive. Use a very soft cloth to pat your face dry. Rubbing too hard can irritate your skin too. I have also found out Rosacea is common in those that blush. I hope this helps!
