Thrifty Thursday – Learning from Experience

July30

I am having another garage sale this Saturday because my last one was mostly rained out. But this time I am doing it differently… I learned from experience, which is oftentimes our best teacher, isn’t it?

The last few garage sales that I have been to I have been noticing a trend of placing like items into brown paper bags (you know, the kind that you get at the grocery store), and then putting a price on the bag for everything in it.

This works extremely well because it eliminates all the sifting through stuff scattered all over tables and the floor of the garage, and makes for a very efficient sale.

For instance, I can place like items such as books of the same genre or clothes of the same size/gender all in one bag, and place a price of $3.00 or $5.00 on the bag. I leave a little room for haggling with the buyer, and we both get a good deal. The buyer gets a good deal because they are getting a bunch at once for a low price, and they feel like they are getting more for the money. The seller gets a good deal because the mess is less, and it sells more at once, especially items that don’t typically sell well, but when grouped with other items, they do.

I love it when I can be organized for my garage sales, because I know how nice it is to shop at these types of sales, you can tell very quickly if you want something, and the price is reasonable. Speaking of organization, have you seen the August issue of Molly’s Money Saving Digest? It’s chock-full of ideas to get organized in your home, finances, etc. It’s selling like crazy and the feedback has been very positive. Go check it out today; you won’t want to miss it!

I know a number of people who have tried this method of organizing their garage sales and you know what? They made more money than using previous methods!

So, for the next couple of days, as I am able, I will be sorting, grouping, and pricing bags and placing them on tables in my garage. Please pray for a good sale, and better weather, and I hope this tip helps you in your frugal adventures too!

    Hi Molly,
I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for all of the links that you included on the Homeschool Freebie section in the Homeschool Minute. It was the one on Lesson Planning and they were very informative.
    Thanks again!

At the last garage sale I held, I priced all clothes 50 each or 3 for $1. I sold out. Anything that needed to be priced differently was hung up and marked, but all clothes on a table or not marked were that price.

I have found that holding a “private sale” for friends who have kids a little younger than mine also works really well. I have people calling me once a season to see what I’m getting rid of.
