Recycled T-Shirt Yarn
While I technically learned to knit when in my early teens, I only knew how to knit one item (slippers) and then, only one stitch. In the last couple of months, my neighbor has been giving me knitting lessons. Well, actually I go to her house to watch The Biggest Loser and she finally talked me into taking up knitting with her.
My first project was one of these dishcloths, which are aptly named, I might add! They knit up very quickly and make nice gifts. My first “real” project was one of these shrugs.

My neighbor actually knitted the one above (in under 24 hours!!) for my daughter to wear to an outside event where we weren’t sure what the weather would be. But I made a larger version of the same shrug in a dusty blue. (It’s not lopsided, really! We just didn’t straighten it for the picture) This involved an actual pattern, binding, and all manner of tricky moves! I was pretty impressed that I actually got it done and it turned out.
Tonight I just came across a blog with instruction on making T-Yarn or tarn as she calls it. Isn’t that neat? And look at the cute things she makes with it; trivets, scrubbie/dishcloths, and even a purse! I love that purse! These aren’t knitted, but crocheted and I DO know how to do that! I’m really intrigued with the T-shirt yarn. Thing is, I think all my T-shirts have side seams. I’m going to be keeping a lookout, though.
Addendum: Oops! Forgot to link to the shrug pattern. Per the request in the comments, you can find it HERE. We left a “hole” and added a button, rather than using a brooch like the photo. I’ll have to admit I don’t know how to do that at all because my neighbor did it, but if you’re a knitter, you can probably figure it out.

Can you share where you found the pattern for that cute shrug? I would love to make a couple of those!

Oops! Sorry about that. I added it to the original post. Please share a picture if you do make some. I’d love to see.
So glad you discovered my blog and T-yarn. You can use any tee-shirts to create the yarn by cutting them in strips. If you want to make the curled T-yarn, the ones without side seams do work better but either way you can crochet with the strips you cut from any tee-shirts that you may have. You just cut them into long continuous strips about 1-2″ to 3/4″ wide. Good luck.

Thanks Cindy!
I saw the T-shirt yarn posted on another site today too – what a wonderful idea!
That shrug is so cute! My 11yo daughter actually crocheted a different style shrug and posted a pic on her blog here:

She used a pattern in a book that she checked out from the library. I can find out the name of the book from her if you are interested.

That is VERY cute! She has the name of the book in her post. I will see if I can find it.
Oh, I need to try to make tarn! Looks like great fun. And the shrug I need to make too! Thanks for sharing!
