Cheap and (shhh!) educational boredom buster
Around here we use the folding display boards from past geography and science fairs to build quick and easy play forts–inside and out! You know what’s great about these boards? They’re light, they’re pretty cheap, and they can store absolutely flat. We have some stashed behind the couch and many more in the basement rafters. Kids of just about any age can assemble their own forts–just set up some boards, throw a sheet over, and move in! Here, let me give you a tour. First, we have the basic walls in place . . .
Now let’s see about the decor. Hmmm … a litte Italy?
All you ever wanted to know about dairy goats?
Ceiling is on . . . and look at that Komodo dragon!
To be frugal, I have to say, we HAVE re-used boards for new school projects. You don’t have to buy a new board every time. But don’t EVER throw a board out! For one of my kids, putting these boards together just seems to work so well for her learning style–she loves doing it, and remembers what she’s learned. Another of the kids is pretty distractible, and will sometimes set up a project board around her area of the kitchen table when doing schoolwork, just to help keep herself focused.
Though I’ve never done it, I think it would be great to make a real playhouse, or castle or “log cabin” out of these boards, just use paint or crayons to decorate the cardboard accordingly, cut out windows, use matching themed sheets as a roof . . . instead of what just happens to be in reach in the linen closet.
I’ve picked these boards up for $1 apiece at the dollar store, or on clearance at Walmart or Staples. You can make a good sized fort with just 3 or 4. That works for me as a cheap and easy boredom buster. For more ideas, visit Works for Me Wednesdays at We Are THAT Family!

Too funny! They’d never even realize they were reviewing.
Great idea!
Awesome! I’ve got to get some more of those cardboard displays. My kids will LOVE this!
