Family Fun Friday
When we were kids, every month or so my parents would take us on a “Mystery Tour.” A lot of times it wasn’t necessarily anywhere that exciting . . . the real fun was in not knowing where we were going to end up. Once it was driving into the city to look at the lights at night, and take a train ride. Another time we went to a park not too far away, but for a treat, rented a paddle boat. I remember one Christmas time driving around eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate in the car (not usually allowed!) to look at the decorations and lights in a ritzy neighborhood.
We never knew where we’d end up — maybe visiting friends who lived on a farm, or visiting a U-pick strawberry patch. I don’t remember all the destinations, but all these years later I remember the excitement of going on mystery tours as a child . . . and even though many of the destinations were mundane, I don’t remember ever being disappointed. It was all about the fun of a special family time together with an element of surprise.
Even a splurge drive-through at Dairy Queen for Dilly or Buster Bars (about $1 apiece) can be a fun mystery tour adventure. For more Family Fun Friday ideas visit Mom by Heart.
Remember, being frugal DOES NOT mean not having fun!

That does sound fun. I remember being called out of bed for a “fun” ride once and how special it was.
