Weekend reading links – saving money on groceries
I’m always looking for new tips to save money when feeding my family. I am also on a new mission NOT to throw food out, but to be sure we use it up. We’ve had a few instances recently where the family has not eaten the fresh fruit quickly enough, so I need to work on that. Happy reading!

Great links; thanks! We have the same situation with (sometimes) not eating fresh fruit before it’s spoiled. That seems to happen the most with bananas. What I like to do is mash the bananas and freeze measured portions. It’ll turn brown, but it’s still good for banana bread.
Found your blog through The Old School House…fellow home school mom of five, and blogger of all things frugal.
Thought you might enjoy my Frugal Fashionista posts on designer wardrobes. As a speaker at our NCHE conference, I was thrilled that they decided to branch out from traditional “homeschool/mom” topics this year, as I will be doing a frugal living workshop…”Living on More….with Less.”
Dress will be one of the topics I cover, but I know I need to tread lightly since there is such a vast opinion on what is acceptable. One thing I do know it that getting out of PJ’s and sweats does tremendous things in how to attack our day.
(As I sit here in my PJ’s…hee hee…off to change.)
I am so glad that I found this blog! It has inspired me to try to cut our grocery bill down. I have started by making my own bread, cleaning with vinegar and now I am using coupons and shopping sales.
I went on my first coupon/sales shopping day and saved over $100!!!! I couldn’t believe it!
I am getting into this!
Thank you,
Janet

When I have disappointing fruit (overripe soft fruits, or mushy nectarines that are still nicely tart) I toss it in the freezer to include in a future smoothie. I just pop out the pit from a peach, for example, and drop the two halves into a freezer bag. Later I can easily pry off a half or two to drop into the blender with whatever else I’m making.
One of the best smoothies you can make is pear with plain or vanilla yogurt and a squeeze of lemon, sweetened to taste. When the smoothie seems bland, I sometimes add a bit of Crystal Light of a complementary flavor to pump it up (like lemonade in the pear smoothie).
Ugly apples can also be diced over the pot as water/milk is coming to a boil for oatmeal. They cook just right by the time the oats are done.
